U-Factor, SHGC and Design Pressure often appear together in a window specification, but they do not measure the same thing.
U-Factor deals with heat moving through the window. SHGC deals with heat from the sun. Design Pressure deals with wind and structural load.
Builders do not need to run the calculations themselves. They do need to make sure the aluminum window supplier is quoting the values required for the project, not simply offering the lowest number on a product sheet.
How well does the complete window insulate?
U-Factor measures non-solar heat flow through the window assembly. A lower number means less heat moves through the product.
Builders should compare the U-Factor for the complete window, not a center-of-glass value. The frame, glass, spacer and operating type all affect the final rating.
For thermal break aluminum windows, glass alone does not determine performance. The aluminum profile and thermal break are part of the result.
How much heat from the sun gets through?
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is shown as a number between 0 and 1. A lower SHGC blocks more solar heat. A higher SHGC allows more solar heat into the building.
That does not mean the lowest SHGC is right for every job. Hot, sunny projects often need stronger solar control. Colder climates or shaded elevations may have different priorities.
Window orientation matters too. A large west-facing glass area may need a different approach than a smaller north-facing opening.
Can the window handle the required project pressure?
Design Pressure, usually shown in pounds per square foot, relates to the structural load the window is expected to resist.
The required pressure depends on the building location, height, exposure, opening position and applicable code. Positive and negative pressures may both need to be reviewed.
A DP rating is not a hurricane certificate and should not be converted directly into a wind-speed claim. The project engineer or code professional should provide the required design criteria.
In plain English: U-Factor is about insulation. SHGC is about sunlight. Design Pressure is about wind load.
One Project Can Need All Three
The energy report and structural drawings answer different questions
The energy documents may call for a low U-Factor and low SHGC. The structural criteria may require different design pressures at lower floors, upper floors and building corners.
A window could meet the energy target and still miss the required wind pressure. Another product could pass the structural requirement but use the wrong glass for the project SHGC.
The quote needs to address both.
Where Builders Should Find the Required Values
Usually lists the required U-Factor and SHGC for the project or climate zone.
May include glass type, frame requirements, NFRC ratings and product performance notes.
Provides project design pressures or the information needed for an engineer to determine them.
Show whether the proposed custom aluminum window configuration matches the required performance.
What to Check on a Window Submittal
- The U-Factor and SHGC match the project requirements.
- The ratings apply to the proposed frame and glass configuration.
- The product type matches the schedule: fixed, casement, sliding or awning.
- The tested or certified size covers the required window size.
- The design pressure meets the requirement at that opening.
- Positive and negative pressures are addressed where required.
- Glass thickness and safety-glass locations are correct.
- Installation details match the wall construction and tested conditions.
Do not approve a rating by series name alone. Window size, operating type, glass, hardware and configuration can change the performance. Ask the supplier to identify the exact product being quoted.
Common Pricing Mistakes
The glass may perform well while the complete aluminum window has a different U-Factor.
The correct value depends on climate, orientation and the energy design.
Corner zones, upper floors and larger openings may have different requirements.
Structural pressure performance and impact testing are separate requirements.
What to Send the Window Manufacturer
For an accurate aluminum window quotation, send the window schedule, project location, energy requirements, structural criteria and relevant drawings.
The supplier should also know the window type, rough opening size, glass, frame color, hardware, screens and installation method.
If U-Factor, SHGC or Design Pressure is still pending, label it as pending. That is better than allowing the factory to price a standard configuration that may need to be changed later.
